Primarily a residential area of late 19th-century stone and brick townhouses, Capitol Hill is a pleasant area to live in. The Hill, although it physically resembles Dupont Circle, is quieter, less trendy and more family-oriented.

The neighborhood's non-federal centerpiece is Eastern Market, the last remnant of Washington's 19th-century market system. Built in 1873, the building holds produce, meat and fish stands. Artists sell their work in the northern part of the market.

The Hill is home to many Senators and representatives.
